People indigenous to the United States, the "American" Indians, are a population steeped in history, culture, and diversity. There are many websites devoted to sharing information about Native American history--from earliest times to modern day.
Native Americans include a large number of tribes or Indian Nations (Blackfeet, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chippewa, Cree, Inuit, Navajo, Onondaga, Sioux, etc.), ethnic groups, states and/or continuing political communities. Native American is today's politically correct term, however...
In the United States one usually refers to Native Americans within the context of the original inhabitants of the land now known as the United States of America, including Alaska and Hawaii. However, the term itself provokes controversy (see Wikipedia article) among some folks because the term "Native American" literally encompasses people indigenous to the North AND South American continents. Other terms include: Indians, Amerindians, Amerinds, Indigenous Americans, Aboriginal Americans, Original Americans, and First Nations, among others.
